Numbers 14:24
In my opinion one of the most powerful names and characters in the Bible is Caleb. The reason I think this, is because of the meaning of the name, the name Caleb means: bold, bull dog, forcible and tenacious.
God said in the verse for this devotion ”But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed Me truly, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it”.
The Caleb spirit of boldness, passion, tenacity, spiritual aggressiveness was observed and commented on by God.
He was different to the other men that went out to spy the promised land with him. Notice in Numbers chapters 13 and 14 the spirit of Caleb on show. When the 12 men came back from spying out the promised land, 10 of them began to speak negatively about what they had seen, they spoke to the people about the strengths of the enemy and gave reasons as to why they should not go into the promised land. As the 10 men are saying this and discouraging the people, the Bible says in chapter 13 verse 30 “And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it”. This did not go unnoticed by God.
The ten were negative, Caleb was positive
The ten saw the giants, Caleb saw God
The ten brought an evil report, Caleb brought a good report
The ten saw the problem, Caleb saw the answer
The ten were discouraging, Caleb was encouraging
The ten doubted God, Caleb believed God
The ten wanted to kill Moses, Caleb protected Moses
We need in our church, people with the Caleb spirit. That will be bold and passionate about what God wants to do in our lives as a church. There is a promised land to possess this year and we must say, with God we are well able to take it, no matter the giants, the opposition, the doubts and fears.
If God be for us who can be against us.
May God see in us the “Caleb spirit”. Amen.
