Abundant Life

“The thief comes to steal, kill and to destroy, but I (Jesus) have come to give you life, and life more abundantly”.

This is one of the most well known verses in the Bible, amongst believers. But more than just head knowledge, this verse must be a revelation that we believe and live out in our lives as real.

Firstly, we must know that the thief is the devil. You might say that is common sense, but many people really do think that the thief are people or even in some cases God himself.

Thief in the Greek means: A robber, a stealer, an extortioner, someone that takes away.

What does this thief, robber etc, do? He comes to Steal, this means: to take something away that is special to you, in a secret way. To kill, this means: to lay violent hands on, take the life away from a person, sacrifice etc. And the thief comes to Destroy, this means: To corrupt, be lost, cause chaos, to cast down. This is what the devil comes to do.

But praise the Lord that the verse goes on to tell us what can be ours.

The verse goes on to say, “I have come (Jesus) to give you life and life more abundantly”. Jesus our Lord and saviour comes not to steal, or to kill or to destroy, no, no, no. He comes to give us the total opposite, He gives us life, this word in the Greek is “Zoe” and it means: Existence, life that satisfies, blessed life, eternal life etc. and He does this abundantly, this word means: Superabundant, superior, overflowing, beyond, exceedingly, more than enough.

This is the life that Jesus has promised us, we must believe it and allow Him to manifest it in every area of our lives; spirit, soul and body.
