The Multitude and The Disciples

Matthew 13:36
On this particular day,  Jesus found himself sitting on the back of a boat teaching multitudes by way of parables. He taught the parable of the sewer,  the parable of the wheat and tares, and also the parable of the mustard seed and of the leaven.

A parable is a story that has a divine teaching attached to it and if not explained and revealed is of no benefit to the hearer; or in Jesus’ own words in verse 13 “seeing they see not and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand”. It is obvious from that statement that simply hearing a parable brought no illumination,  until Jesus himself explained the meaning of the parable and only then could it bring clarity, instruction and revelation.

But now notice in verse 36, it interesting to see that  Jesus made an obvious distinction between 2 groups of people, that is, the multitude that heard the parables that day and his disciples who also heard the parables that day. It says in verse 36 “Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house and his disciples came to Him saying, Declare unto us this parable”. The word declare means: define, to expound, teach etc. Notice that the multitude was sent away by Jesus only with a parable they did not understand, but the disciples came into a private house with Jesus for a time of impartation, revelation and illumination. And they were not disappointed.

You see, the multitude was happy to go home and say we heard Jesus, but the disciples wanted more depth and they wanted to know Jesus. The disciples are the group that desires to know more and more about God’s word and His truth. The multitudes came for the show, the disciples came for intimacy. The multitude is happy with the bread and the fish, the disciples want know the giver of the bread and the fish.

Are you part of the multitude or are you a disciple?

It is time that we say to the Holy Spirit “DECLARE UNTO US THE WORD OF GOD” Amen.
